ABOUT JOHN A. ELLIOTT

SOUTH CAROLINA NATIVE

WHERE I COME FROM

I am a native South Carolinian and lifelong Republican who believes in our party’s traditional values. During the past four years as an Oconee County Councilman, I’ve worked to keep taxes low, fought to protect Lake Keowee, agricultural traditions, and our other natural riches that make this County an ideal place to live, work, and retire. At the same time, I’ve labored to attract good-paying jobs to allow our young people to stay here.

A graduate of The Citadel (Bachelor of Business Administration) and Clemson University (Masters in Accounting), I’m a Certified Public Accountant who’s invested 37 years in accounting and finance. My focus has been on effective and efficient business management and financial responsibility.

As a CPA, I’ve audited government agency and school district finances and advised these bodies. I’ve also served as a company Controller and Chief Financial Officer of a global textile company. As County Council’s elected Chairman, my experience, education and credentials equipped me to guide the country through its budgetary process.

The result? Improved roads and parks, enhanced security and safety, and insurance that areas such as northern Salem aren’t left out of intrastructure improvements. At the same time, County Council’s property tax rate has been reduced—making Oconee County tax rate the third lowest in SC. I champion citizen involvement in government and community. Practicing what I preach, I’ve served my church as a Deacon and chair of its Financial Committee. I’ve been president of the Sertoma Club, and I’ve volunteered with the Gateway to Spartanburg project.

My wife Marsha, who’s also a native South Carolinian, and I are the proud parents of two daughters, both graduates of the College of Charleston. For all our families, I’m committed to ensuring Oconee County continued economic progress, while preserving its natural beauty through effective planning and land management. I firmly believe that preservation of Oconee County’s natural beauty and pleasing living environment contribute significantly not only to tourism, but serve to make our County a prime candidate for business start-ups, relocation, and expansion. If you share my vision for Oconee County, please support my campaign to continue as your District I Councilman.

Since 2019, I have worked hard to develop a plan that includes both revenue and expense forecasts, and provides the Administrator with guidance for the annual operating budget, along with necessary infrastructure maintenance such as roads and parks. Long-term consideration of future revenue and expense trends is a critical step in planning for our future financial stability. I remain committed to this important requirement.

Since 2019, better roads, parks, and public safety became my goal. I have worked hard to create reserves and to develop a long term capital improvement plan that aligns with the goals that will benefit our county most.
